July 2015 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

What a great start to our summer we’ve had! We started June off with WOOD AND METAL AND WIRE. With wood and metal we made beautiful sculptures, Kalimbas and musical shakers, and machines fueled by our imaginations. We made sailboats out of rounds of logs, complete with stick masts and colorful sails that were hand stitched on to the mast. Everyone had the opportunity to use real woodworking tools: hammers and nails, hand saw and hand drill. We finished this experience with stick and wire mobiles, as well as really looking at where all of our wood comes from…trees! We did bark rubbing, sketches of trees on our playground, and studied bark up close by looking at pieces of bark through magnifying glasses and sketching what we saw.

Now we are ready to explore WEATHER. We will spend our first week talking about all kinds of weather and watching the daily weather report to catch hints of things that meteorologists talk about when reporting. Next we’ll be exploring a variety of weather types in as many ways as we can think of. In our explorations we will be thinking about: wind, rain, clouds, moisture, hail, sleet, weather in different climates and extreme weather. Check the front bulletin board regularly to see what we have planned!
